Scholarships

The three main UK government scholarships on offer are:

GREAT Scholarships

The GREAT Scholarships initiative extends £10,000 towards tuition fees for students from 15 countries pursuing various one-year taught postgraduate courses in the UK.

For the academic year 2024-25, 71 universities across the UK are offering 210 scholarships.

Each country's specific page outlines the participating universities, the covered courses, and the application process for interested students.

Jointly funded by the UK government's GREAT Britain Campaign and the British Council in collaboration with UK higher education institutions, the scholarships include invitations to welcome and networking events during the academic year.

Chevening Scholarships

Chevening Scholarships are highly competitive and prestigious opportunities for international students seeking fully-funded master’s degrees in the UK.

Sponsored by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and partner organizations, Chevening Scholarships target individuals with strong academic backgrounds and leadership potential. The program covers tuition fees, living expenses, and return flights to the UK, offering exclusive networking events, internships, and more.

Since 1983, over 50,000 professionals have benefited from Chevening, highlighting the UK’s commitment to nurturing future leaders.

Applications for the 2024-25 academic year close on November 7, 2023, at 12:00 GMT. Successful candidates will begin their studies in September/October 2024.

Commonwealth Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarships are granted to talented individuals aiming to create a positive global impact. Annually, approximately 800 students get the opportunity to pursue postgraduate degrees at UK universities as part of the UK's commitment to the Commonwealth.

Students from Commonwealth nations who believe in their potential to make a difference on the world stage but lack the means to fund their studies in the UK could be eligible for a Commonwealth Scholarship.

These scholarships target students across the Commonwealth who otherwise wouldn't afford UK education. By financing various postgraduate programs, the scheme nurtures future leaders and innovators.

This esteemed award primarily supports the UK's international development goals. Its goal is to draw exceptional talent to UK universities while promoting sustainable development worldwide.

Eligibility requires citizenship or permanent residency in a Commonwealth nation, including refugees or British protected persons. Applicants should hold an undergraduate honours degree of at least upper second class (2:1). For PhD pursuits, a relevant master’s degree is necessary. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate inability to finance UK studies without the scholarship.

Specific criteria for each scholarship or fellowship type vary and can be found on the CSC website.

Wider UK government funding

The UK government extends numerous scholarships, bursaries, and extra financial aid to students from various nations studying in the UK.

Postgraduate students can explore funding opportunities provided by the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA). Their website offers detailed information on available funding and helps in determining eligibility for scholarships. Visitors can navigate to specific sections on the webpage for relevant details.

UKCISA serves as the national advisory body in the UK, representing the concerns and needs of international students and professionals supporting them.
